Self-Defense Classes Offered at Practical Karate in San Diego

Martial Arts Classes:

Practical Karate provides a variety of classes to cater to different interests and age groups:

  • Little Ninjas
    For students ages 3-6 focusing on karate basics, home and community safety, fundamental movement skills, sitting/standing still and
    following directions. This class aims to teach young students how to be skilled learners and improve physical literacy to enjoy
    movement. The goal of the Little Ninjas class is to prepare young students for the cognitive and physical skills of the Kids Karate class.
  • Kids Karate:
    For students ages 5-10 focusing on core locomotor skills, discipline, self-control, fitness, karate culture, and fundamental martial arts skills for self-defense and empowerment. This class utilizes games and drills to teach important life and movement skills in an
    enjoyable and beneficial environment for children. The goal of the Kids Karate class is to prepare students for the Practical Karate class.
  • Practical Karate:
    For adults and young students (ages 10 & up or Orange belt and higher) focusing on fitness, karate culture and practical fighting skills for self-defense. The culture of traditional karate are combined with modern fighting techniques and training methods.
  • Sparring:
    For adults and young students (Orange belt and higher) interested in sparring and learning footwork, timing, angles of attack, technique selection, strategies and training methods for fighting. This class does light sparring with a focus on technical proficiency.
  • Traditional Karate:
    Students learn the basics (kihon), forms (kata), application (bunkai & oyo) of Traditional Japanese Karate. Taught by Sensei Ferdie Allas this class focuses on traditional karate culture, physical conditioning and application of karate techniques for self-defense.
  • Advanced Karate:
    For serious karate students (ages 10 & up or Orange belt and higher) to learn the advanced techniques of kata, bunkai, oyoand goshin jutsu (self-defense techniques) from traditional Shito-Ryu Karate with an emphasis on focus, physical fitness and fighting ability.
  • Judo:
    For adults and young students (10 & up or Orange belt and higher). Students learn how to fall (ukemi), grip fighting (kumi kata),
    breaking balance (kuzushi waza), throwing (nage waza), submissions and controlling opponents on the ground (newaza).
  • Wrestling:
    Students (ages 8 & up) learn stance, footwork, hand fighting, head positioning, tie ups and clinch work for takedowns. On the ground students learn pressure, control, pins, escapes and reversals. This class is great for building functional strength, stamina, and grit. Each class is structured to accommodate various skill levels, ensuring that both beginners and advanced students receive appropriate instruction.
